Negative trends in Arctic grow — Northern Fleet’s commander

Alexander Moiseyev explained that the importance and prospects for the development of the Arctic Region were the reason why the fleet had been converted into a special strategical entity

MOSCOW, October 21. /TASS/. The commander of Russia’s Northern Fleet, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, has warned of growing negative trends in the military-political situation in the Russian Arctic.

"In his report, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev noted that despite the relative stability and absence of real challenges and threats to regional security in the Arctic the military-political situation in the region at the present stage was characterized by growing negative trends," the fleet's press service said in news release, distributed on Friday after Moiseyev's meeting with the participants in the 62nd Conference of the Parliamentary Association of Northwestern Russia.

The conference is being held in the Murmansk Region. Moiseyev addressed the legislators with a report on the role of the Northern Fleet in strengthening Russia’s defenses and security and protecting its national interests in the Arctic.

The Northern Fleet’s commander explained that the importance and prospects for the development of the Arctic Region were the reason why the fleet had been converted into a special strategical entity. Since 2014 the Northern Fleet has operated as an independent combined strategic territorial contingent of the Russian Armed Forces in the Arctic. Since 2020 it has enjoyed the status of a military district.

"Admiral Moiseyev told the legislators that the Northern Fleet’s forces maintained a high degree of combat readiness and performed the entire range of tasks to ward off military threats in the Arctic region, including those in the waters of the Northern Sea Route," the news release says.

Within the framework of the conference, the legislators’ delegation plans to visit a number of the Northern Fleet’s facilities, including the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky, strategic missile submarine Novomoskovsk, and naval museums.
