Russian Federation Council speaker to visit China

The Russian delegation will visit the cities of Wuhan and Beijing, hold several meetings with the country’s leadership

MOSCOW, September 7. /TASS/. The delegation of the Russian Federation Council headed by Speaker Valentina Matviyenko will start its working visit to China on Wednesday. Senators will visit the cities of Wuhan and Beijing, hold several meetings with the country’s leadership.

On September 8, Matviyenko will meet with Li Hongzhong, Chairman of Hubei province People’s Congress, and visit the Optical Valley - the largest center of laser and optoelectronics technologies. The Federation Council speaker also plans to visit the Russian-Chinese House of Cultural Exchange.

On September 9, the Russian delegation will hold separate meetings with China’s leadership, including with Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. The sides will discuss developing inter-parliamentarian ties and inter-regional cooperation. Matviyenko will also give a speech at the Beijing-based Tsinghua University outlining the ways to develop the strategic partnership between Russia and China, as well as cooperation in different spheres.

"During the visit, we hope to make decisions that will give a new impetus to cooperation between the Federation Council and National People’s Congress in the legislative sphere, in the spheres of political, economic, scientific & technical, humanitarian cooperation, cooperation on platforms of international parliamentary organizations," Matviyenko said before the visit. She added that broadening cooperation between Russia and China at regional level is promising, as well as implementing joint investment projects, expanding ties in such high-tech spheres as space and aircraft engineering.

According to Dmitry Mezentsev, member of the Federation Council and Chairman of the Russia-China Friendship Association, the intense work program in the Chinese capital and Hubei province, one of the most actively developing regions of the country, will confirm "the strengthening practice of inter-parliamentary cooperation, which will serve as an important step of supporting the high level of strategic cooperation ensured by the relations and dialogue level between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping."

Among Russian delegates are Federation Council’s Deputy Chairman Ilyas Umakhanov, Chairman of the Council’s International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev, member of the Committee on Economic Policy Dmitry Mezentsev.
