MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. Latvia is more interested in developing good relations with Russia than other member-states of the EU, the Latvian ambassador to Russia, Maris Riekstins said on Monday after a meeting with Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of foreign policy committee in the upper house of Russia's parliament.
"Latvia is more interested in developing good relations with Russia than the countries located farther away from the region," he said. "We can benefit more from these relations and to lose more at the same time, if these relations are not good."
Latvia understands the significance of dialogue with neighboring countries, Riekstins said.
"There’s no talking about mutual understanding without dialogue and there is no talking about trust without mutual understanding," he said. "This is something relations between Russia and the EU are lacking in."
Riekstins said the problem in Russia-EU relations was revolving around Ukraine. "The real question is whether or not the situation can be changed so that some prospects appeared in it. At this moment, nobody is happy with the situation."
Riekstins said he would be glad to facilitate the improvement of bilateral relations as an ambassador.
