Russian diplomat accuses Kiev of violating UN Security Council resolution

Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin said there is no need to convene Security Council meetings on Ukraine at the moment

UNITED NATIONS, September 2 /TASS/. The Ukrainian authorities are violating a UN Security Council resolution by ignoring the political aspects of the Minsk agreements, Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin said on Wednesday.

The diplomat said the UN Security Council had adopted a resolution supporting a package of measure to implement the Minsk agreements in February this year.

"So when the Kiev authorities are ignoring the political elements of the Minsk agreements, it means they are violating the UN Security Council resolution. Please, keep that in mind," Churkin told a news conference devoted to the start of Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council.

At the same time, Churkin said there is no need to convene Security Council meetings on Ukraine at the moment.

"The Contact Group is doing a very complicated but important job in Minsk. Other contacts in the ‘Normandy format’ are taking place. Gradual progress is being made in my view," Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations said.
