Kazakh police detain suspect in figure skater Ten's murder — media

The suspect has already admitted his guilt

MOSCOW, July 20. /TASS/. Kazakh police detained one of suspects in the high-profile murder of Kazakh Olympic medalist Denis Ten on Friday, the Tengri News internet portal said citing interior ministry sources.

One of the suspects was detained and taken to a pretrial detention facility. Measures to search and detain the other suspect are under way," the agency quoted an interior ministry spokesperson as saying.

The Kazinform news agency reported citing Almaty Prosecutor Beirik Zhuirektayev that the suspect had admitted his guilt.

"He [the detainee] confessed of his guilt in the presence of an attorney. The identity of the other suspect has been established, an active search for him is under way," the official was quoted as saying.

The detainee was identified as Nuraly Kiyasov, born in 1994, from the southern Zhambyl Region.

Ten, the bronze medalist of the 2018 Sochi Olympics, died in a hospital in Almaty on Thursday afternoon after he had been assaulted by two unidentified suspects and sustained a knife stab. According to Almaty’s police department, he spotted two unknown suspects trying to dismount and steal side-mirrors of his car at about midday local time (9:00 GMT). As a result of the following brawl with the suspects, the 25-year-old figure skater was stabbed and taken to a hospital, where he died three hours later despite enormous efforts of the medical staff to save his life.
