Moscow mayor says Russian capital is as safe as Berlin

According to Sergey Sobyanin, the level of crime in Moscow is lower than in New York, London and Paris

MOSCOW, January 28. /TASS/. Moscow is on the list of major cities of the world demonstrating lowest crime figures, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin told a session of the Interior Ministry Moscow department’s board on Thursday.

The mayor said Moscow was as safe as Berlin, deemed the calmest city of Europe. "As compared with other megacities, Moscow keeps looking decently," the mayor said, noting that under the latest survey of the safety of world cities, Moscow was on the list of cities with a rather low level of crime.

"In Moscow, the level of crime is lower than in New York, London and Paris. According to the overall figures of crime, Moscow is almost at the level of Berlin, one of the calmest cities of Europe," Sobyanin said.

He said last year, the economic and social situation was worsening every month, but nevertheless "all worst forecasts from the point of view of economic decline and thus the worsening of a crime situation, failed".

The mayor hailed Moscow police for coping with the set tasks. "Due to this, the number of foreign tourists in Moscow is not declining, but is growing year by year," Sobyanin went on.

He said alone on Christmas and New Year holidays, the number of foreign tourists doubled in the capital, and the flow of tourists from Russian regions grew 40%

The mayor thanked Moscow police for ensuring law and order at major city events, mentioning the "Immortal Regiment" march in Moscow on Victory Day, in which hundreds of thousands of Muscovites carried photographs of their relatives who fought against Nazis, cherishing their memory, as well as the Moscow City Day in the first days of September celebrated by millions of Muscovites and guests.
