2nd Global Fishery Forum programme announced

The Forum’s business programme for 13 September opens with an international conference on ‘Issues in commercial straddling stocks fishing activities’

TASS, 15 August. Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation – Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, held a press conference in Moscow where he announced the extended business program of the 2nd Global Fishery Forum. The head of the Federal Agency for Fishery dwelled on the matters of preparing for the Forum and on the key topic of the upcoming event: “Global fishing activities 2050”; he also spoke about the achievements of Russia’s current fishery sector. 

“After the first successful Forum held last year, we are scaling the event up and our discussion topics are becoming even more daring. We will discuss whether it is possible for the current agreements and international fishery organizations to prevent the impending tensions in the global food security; we will also focus on the possibilities of long-term forecasting,” Mr. Shestakov said. 

The Forum’s business programme for 13 September opens with an international conference on ‘Issues in commercial straddling stocks fishing activities’. World level experts and scientists will discuss how to make optimum use of the straddling fish stocks without detriment to populations, will come up with new proposals for sustaining fish diversity and organizing sustainable fishing.

14 September will see the Forum’s key event: the plenary session ‘Global fishing activities 2050: resources, markets, technologies’. The participants will include Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexei Gordeyev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Prime Minister and Fisheries Minister of the Faroe Islands Høgni Hoydal, Assistant Director-General of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department Árni Mathiesen, General Secretary of the ICES Anne Christine Brusendorff and RAS Vice President Andrei Adrianov. 

“It is impossible to determine the key lines of development of Russia’s fishing industry without understanding what will happen to the global fishery resource base in the long term and what the market trends will be. In addition, only co-operation and regular international dialogue will promote a solution to the problems of global fish security and exhaustion of general stocks,” Ilya Shestakov noted.

The second day of the event will also include a ‘Resources’ roundtable for specialists to consider aspects of forecasting the volume of water bioresources available for catching up to 2050, the role of science and international organizations in managing industry resources. The roundtable ‘Aquaculture: 2050 breeding and development forecast’ will provide a platform for discussing the long-term prospects for development of fresh water and marine aquaculture, quality control and output safety. 

On 15 September, there will be a conference ‘Global consumer markets’. Experts believe that the market will inevitably reach a new level of information collaboration, which will produce a new for developing global standards. 

The subject will be continue at the regional level at the conference ‘Our fish: promotion strategy for domestic fish products on the Russian market’. The participants will discuss the problems involved in raising the demand for Russian fish and developing a culture for its consumption in the country; representatives of business will share their experience of successful fish product sales, increasing competitiveness and brand recognition.

The final event on the Forum’s business programme is a ‘Technologies: from production to consumer’ roundtable, which will discuss the international legislative framework and technical aspects of providing the population with quality products, including promising lines for developing refrigeration technologies and processing. 

The Global Fishery Forum and Seafood Expo will culminate in an award ceremony for the winners of the competition ‘Best Seafood Product’.

At the press conference, in addition to matters of preparing for the Forum and Expo, Ilya Shestakov touched upon such important fishery issues as developing infrastructure for Russian fishermen, corporatization of the National Fish Resources, and the campaign for assigning quotas on aquatic bioresources catch. The head of the Federal Agency for Fishery also announced preliminary results of distributing quotas for investment purposes and broached issues in supplying fish to the domestic market.
