MOSCOW, March 14. /TASS/. Moscow will work for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the forum Russia - a Country of Opportunities on Thursday.

"We will be working for the enforcement of the UN Security Council’s resolutions, which require respect for the territorial integrity, freedom, independence and sovereignty of Syria," Lavrov said.

He added that the same applied to the United States, which "contrary to many vows to respect the sovereignty of Syria in practice takes different steps."

The UN Security Council in December 2015 adopted Resolution 2254 in support of a peace settlement of the conflict in Syria. Under the resolution the opposition and the government were to enter into negotiations in January 2016 with the aim to form a government, adopt a constitution and hold a general election within 18 months after the beginning of discussions.

On January 24, 2018 the UN Security Council voted for Resolution 2401 on truce in Syria for at least 30 days to provide humanitarian aid to the population. The resolution does not apply to terrorist groups Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (both outlawed in Russia).
