MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. A delegation from Russia’s Federal Council (upper house) headed by the Chairwoman, Valentina Matviyenko, has arrived in Egypt on an official visit scheduled for March 3 - 5, where they will be discussing the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation and issues on combating terrorism, the Federation Council’s press center informed TASS.
The program includes meetings with the country’s leadership, as well as with the Chairman of the Egyptian Chamber of Deputies (unicameral parliament), Ali Abdel Aleem. "Pressing international problems, issues on counter-terrorism and cooperation, including on an international level, will be touched upon," the press center noted.
According to the chairwoman, ties between Russia and Egypt have developed very favorably in recent times. "The leaders of both countries are holding an ongoing political dialogue. Strengthening parliamentary cooperation will contribute to developing interregional ties and widening cooperation in economics, the energy sector and in the investment field," the diplomat stated, adding that the Russian senators’ visit would give new momentum to bolstering ties between Moscow and Cairo.
Earlier Russia’s speaker told reporters that the visit by the Federal Council’s delegation to Egypt was planned and is not related to issues on resuming air traffic to the Arab Republic. The senator hopes that the activities, which the two countries’ aviation authorities are engaged in, will bring about a positive result soon. Besides, she emphasized that "there are details that the Russian side is not satisfied with," concerning flight security.
Inter-parliamentary contacts, suspended after the revolutionary upheaval in Egypt and the following dissolution of the parliament, were renewed in 2016. Egypt’s parliamentary delegation headed by Ali Abdel Aleem visited Moscow last June. Matviyenko also held a meeting with the Chairman of the Egyptian Chamber of Deputies on the sidelines of the 135th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in October 2016 in Geneva.
