Lavrov, Syrian opposition leader discuss prospects of Geneva-based talks

The Russian Foreign Ministry says the sides have also discussed current developments in Syria

MOSCOW, June 27. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met on Monday with leader of the Syrian opposition movement Syria’s Tomorrow Ahmed al-Jarba to tell him about Russia’s efforts in the interests of political settlement in that country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The sides exchanged views on the development of the situation in Syria," the ministry said. "Lavrov informed in detail about Russia’s principled approaches and practical efforts in the interests of the soonest political settlement of the Syrian crisis, easing the humanitarian situation and strengthening the regime of cessation of hostilities."

Al-Jarba stressed that his movement is committed to peaceful solution of the conflict in Syria on the basis of corresponding resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, the International Syria Support Group and the Geneva communique of 2012."

"The sides also discussed prospects for the United Nations-brokered intra-Syrian contacts in Geneva between delegations of the Syrian government and a wide spectrum of representatives of the Syrian opposition who condemn terrorism," the ministry said.

The Syria opposition leader also met with Russian president’s special envoy for the Middle East and African countries and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
