Putin and Merkel discuss Syrian settlement over phone — Kremlin

The Kremlin press service added that the sides also discussed US plans to withdraw troops from Syria

MOSCOW, December 28. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

"The sides discuss in detail the Syrian conflict with an emphasis on the implementation of the decisions made at the four-party summit (Russia, Turkey, Germany, France) held on October 27 in Istanbul. Vladimir Putin stressed that the work of countries guarantors of the Astana process on forming the lists of constitutional committee members creates conditions for achieveing a long-term and stable settlement in Syria," the press service said.

The press service added that the sides also discussed US plans to withdraw troops from Syria.

Moreover, Putin and Merkel exchanged opinions on the situation in the Kerch Strait after three Ukrainian warships violated Russia's state borders on November 25.

The Russian president and the German chancellor wished each other happy New Year and agreed to maintain contacts.
