Russian arrested at Amsterdam airport on charges of supporting IS

The Berlin prosecutor’s office noted that the man is suspected of financing the militants training and the purchases of weapons for IS in Syria

BERLIN, August 3. /TASS/. A Russian citizen has been detained at the Amsterdam airport on charges of supporting the terror organization Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia), said a spokesman for the Berlin prosecutor’s office, that is investigating the case against the person in question in cooperation with Brandenburg's Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

"Yes, I can confirm that he is a Russian citizen," he said.

The office noted that Yusup, aged 29, is suspected of financing the militants training and the purchases of weapons for IS in Syria. The investigators say he transferred money to the most dangerous IS members. After the suspect had learnt that a criminal case had been launched against him, he hid away in a South American country. On Thursday, he was arrested upon arrival from that country.

The Dutch Broadcasting Foundation (Nederlandse Omroep Stichting - NOS) specified on Friday that a European arrest warrant had been issued for Yusup, and he was arrested under this warrant. Now the Dutch authorities will have to make a decision on the extradition of the detainee.

TASS has not obtained any comments from the Russian embassy yet.
