Bank of Russia plans to roll out 100-ruble plastic bank note for 2018 World Cup

The design of new bank notes was earlier approved by the Bank of Russia

MOSCOW, February 14. /TASS/. The Bank of Russia will issue its first ever 100-ruble plastic bank note dedicated to 2018 World Cup in the first quarter of 2018, First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Georgy Luntovsky said on Tuesday.

"A commemorative currency note dedicated to the World Cup will definitely be a plastic one. The feel and quality of the material will differ," Luntovsky emphasized. The Bank of Russia intends to issue it in the first quarter of 2018.

"Goznak [Russia’s principal minter of coins and currency notes - TASS] is dealing with such technology for the first time, so that’s why we are not rushing to implement it," the banker added.

The Central Bank also intends to use plastic when producing either the 200-ruble or 2,000-ruble new bank notes with symbols of Sevastopol and the Far East. "We first want to experiment with a plastic currency note," Luntovsky said.

The design of new bank notes was earlier approved by the Bank of Russia.
