Berths at Pevek port to be reconstructed by yearend

Reconstructions of two berths at Chukotka’s Pevek port on the Northern Sea Route will be completed in December

TASS, January 30. Reconstructions of two berths at Chukotka’s Pevek port on the Northern Sea Route will be completed in December, Head of the region’s Department of Transport Andrey Bykov told TASS on Wednesday.

The reconstruction began in 2016 at the Russian government’s expense but was suspended later on as the contractor failed to meet undertaken obligations. Thus, currently, the port uses only one berth, which is not sufficient for its turnover.

"The reconstruction of berths number one and two at the Pevek sea port is financed from the federal budget," the official said. "The plan is to complete the in December, 2019."

The port’s website reads the water depth by the reconstructed berths will reach eleven meters. The port will serve vessels with displacement of up to 30-35 thousand tonnes.

The Pevek port is a biggest port on the Northern Sea Route, which serves more than a quarter of all cargoes brought by sea to Chukotka, as well as all general cargoes for companies, working at the Chaun-Bilibinskoye industrial area. The navigation season is between July and October. The port reports its annual turnover at more than 280,000 tonnes.

Presently, the port’s berth number one is 186 meters long, its navigation depth is 9.35 meters. Berth number two is 180 meters long, the water depth is 9.35 meters. Berth number three stretches for 134 meters, the navigation depth is 7.85 meters.
