ARKHANGELSK, January 29. /TASS/. The Northern Path 2019 snowmobile expedition, which started on January 11 from Murmansk, arrived in Naryan-Mar. In minus 40 degrees frosts, it took the participants six days to get from Arkhangelsk to Naryan-Mar, the expedition’s coordinator Igor Smolin told TASS.
Three travelers from Magnitogorsk plan to cross the Russian Arctic’s eight regions from Murmansk to Kamchatka within three months. The expedition participants - experienced travelers - will cover about 17,000 km.
"The group has covered the passage between Arkhangelsk and Naryan-Mar within six days, despite a minor failure, which they managed to fix in Mezen (a town in the Arkhangelsk Region’s north-east - TASS)," the coordinator said. "For a few days, they drove in air temperatures minus 40-42, which is the lowest possible temperature for them to drive."
According to him, from Arkhangelsk to Mezen the group followed an old road, which had connected the two cities before a modern road appeared. "Along that road, during the war [World War II], reindeer battalions marched from the Nenets District to Arkhangelsk towards the Karelian Front," he said. "The participants enjoyed that passage: it was especially interesting for them in terms of driving snowmobiles - driving there is tough, but the scenic views give wonderful impressions."
In Naryan-Mar the expedition members had a meeting with the Nenets Region’s Governor Alexander Tsybulsky. The group will leave Naryan-Mar to drive eastbound, towards Amderma and further on to the Yamalo-Nenets Region.
