Arctic Floating University’s students to explore Novaya Zemlya in summer

The expedition will last for 20 days

TASS, April 18. /TASS/. More than 50 students, participating in the Arctic Floating University project, will travel to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in summer, Head of the Northern Arctic Federal University, Elena Kudryashova told TASS on Wednesday.

"This year, it will be the tenth expedition," she said. "The participants will visit the territories of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, which were not available for research in the Soviet times."

"The expedition will feature scientists, students," she continued. "The students, competition winners, will be involved in research in ecology, meteorology, water streams, they will watch animals and birds."

The expedition will continue for 20 days, she said. The participants will stop at a few northern islands to collect data for the national hydro-meteorology service and for other organizations.

"They will make a few stops on the archipelago’s islands to continue the research of previous years - it is most important to have sufficient data for analyses," she said. "The surveys would be in the interests of Roshydromet, the Academy of Sciences’ institutes, and a few state-run corporations working in the Arctic."

The Arctic Floating University is a scientific-educational project for the Arctic studies. The expeditions onboard the Professor Molchanov vessel feature scientists and students. The project’s organizers are the Lomonosov Northern Arctic Federal University (SAFU), Roshydromet and the Russian Geographical Society.
