SOFIA, August 17 (Itar-Tass) — Unknown vandals desecrated a Red Army monument in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia on Friday. They put on colorful fabric stockings on the heads of the sculptures. The stockings resemble those in which members of the Pussy Riot punk group prayed at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

The monument itself remained intact. No graffiti were left on it. Utility workers have removed all inappropriate items.

Last June, vandals painted the monument to Soviet soldiers with American commix characters and left an inscription “Keeping Pace with the Times” on its foundation. Members of the Bulgaria-Russia fund cleaned the monument from paint.

Friday’s action was apparently linked to the Pussy Riot case which is arousing great interest in Bulgaria. The court is expected to announce the verdict later on Friday.
