MAKHACHKALA, January 27 (Itar-Tass) —— Four servicemen of the Russian Interior Ministry Forces died and four were injured in a police operation in the Kizlyar district of Dagestan on Friday, the Russian Investigation Committee told Itar-Tass.
“Servicemen of the Interior Ministry Forces clashed with a group of militants near Chernyayevka,” it said. Reinforcements were sent to the clash scene, but the active operation was suspended in the dark.
Five militants are dead. They are being identified.
The National Counter Terrorism Committee said that the killed militants were members of the so-called Kizlyar gang involved in terror attacks, killings of clerics and racket.
Committee spokesman Nikolai Sintsov told Itar-Tass that the armed group was detected in a forest between Chernyayevka and Ukrainsky in the search for militants conducted in Dagestan by the Interior Ministry Forces, the police and units attached to the National Counter Terrorism Committee.
“The militants opened fire from a machine gun and submachine guns when the police tried to block them in a dugout,” he said. “All the five militants in the dugout were killed in the clash.”
The dugout contained food, equipment, weapons and bomb parts.
