Xi Jinping told Donald Trump opening Strait of Hormuz is urgent need — Wang Yi
The Chinese president emphasized that force does not resolve problems and that dialogue is the only right path
BEIJING, May 15. /TASS/. Chinese President Xi Jinping has told US President Donald Trump there is an urgent need to quickly open the Strait of Hormuz, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has said.
"President Xi Jinping outlined China's unwavering position, emphasizing that force does not resolve problems and that dialogue is the only right path," the Chinese Foreign Ministry website quoted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as saying in response to journalists' questions following Trump's visit to Beijing.
"China calls on the US and Iran to continue to resolve disagreements, including the nuclear issue, through negotiations. It advocates for the early opening of the Strait of Hormuz based on the observance of the ceasefire, and believes that the fundamental solution to the Strait issue lies in achieving a permanent and comprehensive cessation of hostilities."
Wang clarified that he does not expect "immediate results" in the negotiation process between Tehran and Washington, but that "the door to dialogue is open and should not be closed." He reaffirmed that Chinese authorities are continuously working to reconcile the US and Iran and are promoting dialogue between them.
According to the Chinese foreign minister, Beijing will continue to promote an early end to hostilities and the restoration of peace in the Middle East.
