Parties to Gaza conflict agree to resume mediated talks — media
According to sources from the Egyptian side and the radical movement, "the agreements envision the start of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel"
CAIRO, May 14. /TASS/. The Palestinian Hamas movement, Israel and mediators at indirect talks on settling the Gaza Strip crisis have agreed to resume dialogue, the Maan news agency close to Hamas reported.
According to sources from the Egyptian side and the radical movement, "the agreements envision the start of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel." The outlet also notes that the United States will serve as the main mediator in the forthcoming round of dialogue between the conflicting parties.
The sources noted that initially Hamas and Israel will be asked to agree to "a ceasefire for a period of three weeks to forty days." During this time, the radicals must release two living hostages and hand over to the Israeli side four dead hostages, all of whom hold, or held, both Israeli and American citizenship.
Under the proposed agreement, corridors for transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilian population would be opened, while Hamas would be required to provide proof that part of the aid is reaching Israeli hostages remaining in the Strip. The group would also need to deliver updates on the health condition of those still in captivity.
Some time ago, Al Jazeera reported that US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Witkoff and a team of Israeli representatives would travel to Qatar to resume indirect talks with Hamas. According to Witkoff, he is going to visit Doha because he believes there is a window of opportunity to significantly advance the dialogue between the two sides.
Earlier, radicals handed over Edan Alexander to the International Committee of the Red Cross in the town of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. The movement emphasized that the release of the captive must be part of a broader package of measures aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, including the reopening of all border crossings and the flow of humanitarian aid. Hamas also expressed its readiness to immediately launch negotiations on Gaza and commit serious efforts to reach a deal on halting hostilities and exchanging Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.
