Slovak PM Robert Fico’s condition improving — doctors

BRATISLAVA, May 20. /TASS/. The condition of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was rushed to a hospital last week following an assassination attempt, is improving, the hospital’s management stated citing its team of doctors in a statement on its Facebook account (banned in Russia due to its ownership by Meta designated as extremist) on Monday.
Fico, who survived an assassination attempt last Wednesday, was hospitalized at Roosevelt Hospital in the town of Banska Bystrica. He underwent surgery after the attack, and his condition was reported as stable but serious following the operation.
"Following today’s consultations, [we report that] the patient is in stable condition," the statement reads. "His clinical condition is improving, he is already talking [with doctors], and his inflammatory [process] indicators are gradually decreasing."
The F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital announced last week that it would brief the public daily about Fico’s condition, adding that a general medical checkup would be held on Monday, May 20. The consultation would also touch upon the issue of moving the politician to a hospital in Bratislava, but no news regarding this transfer was reported. Fico himself is pushing for the move in order to be closer to his family, which lives in the capital.
An armed attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico took place in the town of Handlova on May 15. The politician suffered gunshot wounds and had to undergo surgery. The shooter was detained. According to the Slovak media, writer Juraj Cintula attacked Fico for political reasons as he disagreed with his views and the government’s policies.
Robert Fico took office as Slovak prime minister on October 25, 2023. Before that, he served as prime minister in 2006-10 and 2012-18. The politician has long been critical of the West’s Ukraine policy, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the conflict, while weapons supplies to Kiev are only leading to more casualties.
