Turkey ousts Austria from 2024 UEFA Euro Cup with 2-1 win in Last 16 stage
Turkey is now set to play against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the 2024 UEFA Euro Cup
BERLIN, July 3. /TASS/. The Turkish national football team defeated Austria 2-1 in a match of Round 16 of the 2024 UEFA Euro Cup in Germany.
Both goals for the Turkish side were scored by midfielder Merih Demiral in the opening minute of the match and in the 59th minute. Austrian striker Michael Gregorich scored for his team in the 66th minute of the game.
Turkish forward Arda Guler said speaking to reporters after the match that "Merih Demiral scored two beautiful goals."
"He jumped very well for his second one. I'm really happy to take corners aiming for his head," the official UEFA Euro Cup website quoted Guler as saying. "I'm very happy to provide my first assist but the most important thing is the team's victory tonight. I'm very happy to contribute to this victory."
Commenting on the match results, Austrian Head Coach Ralf Rangnick said: "We didn't have the necessary luck and I believe if the game had gone to extra time we would have won. The four games we played were very entertaining, including today."
Turkey is now set to play on July 6 against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the 2024 UEFA Euro Cup in Berlin.
In the other quarterfinal matches Spain is set to take on Germany (Stuttgart, July 5), Portugal will play against France (Hamburg, July 5) and England will face off against Switzerland (Dusseldorf, July 6).
The 2024 UEFA Euro Cup is played in Germany between June 14 and July 14. Matches are held in the German cities of Berlin, Dortmund, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen and Dusseldorf.
