MOSCOW, July 15. In the morning rush hour, three train cars have derailed in the metro tunnel between the Park Pobedy and Slavyanskiy Bulvar stations. As a result, 21 people have died; over 160 were injured with 139 of them hospitalized.

July 16 has been declared the day of mourning for the victims of the accident in Moscow.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to family and friends of the victims.

“Vladimir Putin deeply condoles to the family and friends of the victims and wishes the soonest recovery to those injured in the accident,” presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a statement.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims and instructed to help Moscow cope with the consequences of the accident.

“A tragic event occurred here in Moscow — an accident in the metro, people have died, and more than 100 people are in hospital receiving medical treatment,” the prime minister noted.

“On behalf of people present here and of the government of the Russian Federation, I would like to express condolences to the victims’ relatives. And, of course, there is need to help Moscow eliminate the consequences of this severe accident — in terms of healthcare assistance, as well as in other areas that require decision-making in such cases,” he said.

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko expressed condolences to the families of victims and injured as a result of the accident in Moscow’s subway.

“I’m deeply saddened by the news about the horrible accident that occurred in Moscow’s subway. Together with you, I’m worried about the lives and health of people affected in this transport accident,” says an official telegram sent by the Federation Council’s head to the capital’s mayor.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed condolences to the victims’ families, as well as to all Russians, according to UN Secretary General’s spokesperson Farhan Haq.

“UN Secretary General is saddened by the news about the train crash in Moscow, as a result of which many people have died and were injured. In this difficult moment, he expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this tragic incident, to the government and the people of the Russian Federation. He also wishes soonest recovery to the injured,” Haq said.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed his condolences to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, to all the Russian people, as well as to the relatives and friends of the people who died in the train derailment in Moscow’s subway, according to the press service of the Belarusian leader.

Politicians and public people express their condolences to families and friends of the accident’s victims

 “The message about the train accident on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line of Moscow’s metropolitan that led to human losses resounded with ache in the hearts of Belarusians, who share the sorrow with you,” the message says.

US Embassy to Russia has expressed condolences to the families of the victims who died as a result of the accident.

"We offer our condolences to the families of victims and people injured in today's accident in Moscow's metro," the tweet written in Russian on the embassy's official page says.

The metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church prays for the people injured in the accident, the Patriarch’s spokesperson deacon Alexander Volkov has said.

“The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill condoles to all families and friends of the accident’s victims and prays for the soonest recovery of the injured. His Holiness will make a lity on the victims in his residence today,” the press secretary reported.

The Muslims of Russia will pay a tribute to the victims in all mosques, the Council of Muftis said.
