Russian delegation arrives in Astana to take part in international meeting on Syria

Bilateral and trilateral expert meetings are scheduled for December 21, while the plenary session of the international meeting will be held on December 22

ASTANA, December 20. /TASS/. Russia’s delegation led by Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev has arrived in Astana to participate in the talks on the Syrian settlement, Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesman Anuar Zhainakov told TASS.

"The Russian delegation led by Alexander Lavrentiev has arrived in Astana," Zhainakov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, he said that the Turkish and Iranian chief negotiators and part of the Syrian opposition delegation had arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan.

The Foreign Ministry explained that the delegations of the countries acting as the guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire were arriving in Astana to take part in the next round of the talks scheduled for December 21-22. The Russian delegation is led by Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, the Turkish one - by Turkish Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Sedat Onal and the Iranian delegation - by Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari. The delegations of the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition, the UN and the observer states, namely, the US and Jordan, will take part in the upcoming meeting too, the ministry said.
