UN confirms under secretary general for political affairs to visit North Korea

On November 29, North Korea conducted a missile launch, the first since September 15

UNITED NATIONS, December 4. /TASS/. United Nations Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will arrive on an official visit to North Korea on Tuesday, UN Spokesman Farhan Haq told TASS, commenting on a report by the Kyodo news agency.

Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric told reporters that Feltman "will visit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)" on December 5-8. "Mr. Feltman will discuss with DPRK officials issues of mutual interest and concern. He will also meet with the United Nations Country Team and members of the diplomatic corps, as well as visit UN project sites," Dujarric added.

On November 29, North Korea conducted a missile launch, the first since September 15. North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA) said that the Hwasong-15 missile had covered a distance of 950 kilometers during its 53-minute flight, reaching an altitude of 4,475 kilometers.

On the same day, Feltman held a meeting with North Korea’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ja Song-nam, pointing out that the current situation on the Korean Peninsula was dangerous. At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Feltman said that he had handed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’s message over to the North Korean diplomat, which called on Pyongyang to refrain from destabilizing steps and abide by its international obligations.
