UN shocked at Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin’s death

Vitaly Churkin died in New York on Monday, a day before his 65th birthday

UNITED NATIONS, February 20. /TASS/. The United Nations is shocked to hear about the death of Russia’s Ambassador Vitaly Churkin and expresses condolences to his family and the Russian government, Farhan Haq, a Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary General, told TASS on Monday.

"We are very shocked to hear of this news of the passing of Ambassador Churkin. He's been a very longstanding presence here at the UN and we offer our condolences to his family, to his friends and also to the Government of Russia," he said.

Vitaly Churkin died in New York on Monday, a day before his 65th birthday. The Russian Foreign Ministry said he had died while performing his duties. "We offer sincere condolences to the family of Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin."

Churkin was born in Moscow on February 21, 1952 into the family of an aviation design engineer. He has been Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations since April 8, 2006.
