Italian Prime Minister Renzi officially resigns

Renzi resigned because most people voted against the constitutional reform proposed by him at Sunday's referendum

ROME, December 7. /TASS/. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has officially resigned, the presidential press service said on Wednesday.

"President of the republic Sergio Mattarrella has met with the chairman of the Council of Minister Matteo Renzi today who notified him about his resignation. The head of state leaves the right to decide for himself and has proposed to the government to continue performing theid duties on current issues," the statement said.

The press service also noted that the head of state will start political consultations on Thursday at 6pm local time.

Renzi resigned because most people voted against the constitutional reform proposed by him at Sunday's referendum. The reform was the key part of Renzi’s program.
