Damascus expects that Beijing will boost efforts to prevent sponsoring terrorism from the outside, supplying weapons to terrorists and assisting them with illegal penetration into Syrian territory

BEIJING, December 24. /TASS/. The Syrian government expects China and the UN Security Council to step up efforts to prevent terrorist funding and provision of weapons to them from the outside, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said on Thursday following talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

"We hope that China, as a member of the UN Security Council, and the UN Security Council as a whole, in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, will boost efforts to prevent sponsoring terrorism from the outside, supplying weapons to terrorists and assisting them with illegal penetration into Syrian territory," the Syrian foreign minister said.

Syrian government waits for lists of opposition representatives who will take part in Geneva talks

According to Muallem, the Syrian government expects to receive the lists of opposition representatives at talks in Geneva.

"We are waiting for lists of opposition representatives. The government delegation is ready to take part in the next round of talks in Geneva," he said.

Walid Muallem, Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, is paying an official visit to China from December 23 to December 26. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei earlier said that this visit would be part of China’s efforts to facilitate the peace process and political dialogue between the Syrian authorities and the opposition.
