Iraq government forces regain full control over Tikrit

The city had been controlled by IS militants from summer last year

KUWAIT CITY, March 31. /TASS/. The Iraqi armed forces have completely regained control over Tikrit and ousted Islamic State (IS) militants from the city, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday.

The city is under the control of government forces and "the flag of Iraq was installed on top of the building of Saladin Governorate administration," al-Abadi said. Tikrit is the administrative center of the Saladin Governorate.

Earlier, the Iraqi army announced that it regained control over all government building located in Tikrit. The city had been controlled by IS militants from summer last year.

At the beginning of March, Iraqi government forces launched a massive offensive against IS militants. Three weeks later, in the conditions of IS resistance, the operation of freeing Tikrit has stalled. Iraqi President Fuad Masum asked the international coalition to assist the government forces with air strikes at IS positions in and around Tikrit.
