Spanish police arrest 40 in crackdown on distributors of doping agents

MADRID, January 10, /ITAR-TASS/. Spanish police arrested 40 people suspected of distributing sports doping substances among local athletes and confiscated some 380,000 doses of dopants, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The arrests were the result of two separate police raids on gang groups in the cities of Alicante and Valencia, however the dates of the raids were not disclosed.

Members of the criminal organization in Alicante were armed and opened fire on policemen, when law enforcers raided their office.

The gang group in Valencia specialized in receiving doping substances from abroad and distributing them among professional as well as amateur athletes in Spain.

Police also confiscated over 600 fake medical prescriptions for anabolic drugs after inspecting 15 pharmacies in Valencia and arrested a doctor suspected of prescribing them.

Spain stepped up its efforts in fight against distribution of sports doping substances in 2013, when in all 178 people were arrested and around one million doses of dopants were confiscated.
