Defence Ministry plans to recruit 70,000 contract soldiers this year

From 2013 through 2017 recruitment of contract soldiers to increase by 50,000 a year

MOSCOW, September 17 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s Defence Ministry plans to recruit 70,000 contract soldiers, the head of the contract service department, Major General Yevgeny Kuchinsky told reporters on Tuesday.

“For eight and a half months we have recruited over 48,000 people for contract service,” he said. “In general we will enlist up to 70,000 contract soldiers.”

In compliance with the president’s decree, from 2013 through 2017 recruitment of contract soldiers will increase by 50,000 a year. Thus, by 2017 the Defence Ministry plant to enlist 425,000 contract soldiers, which will make up 42.5 percent from the total number of servicemen.

The Defence Ministry has already opened recruitment centres in 66 Russian regions, Kuchinsky said adding that in the near future such centres would be opened in other eight regions. “Beginning from this year citizens have an opportunity to file an application for contract service via the Internet,” he said.
