ANCHORAGE /Alaska/, August 13. /TASS/. An agreement between Russia and the US to resolve the conflict in Ukraine could pave the way for renewed bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the Arctic, former US Ambassador-at-Large for Arctic Affairs Michael Sfraga told TASS, commenting on the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump in Alaska.
"An agreement that permanently ends the war could create an environment in which all Arctic nations may once again address together the many regional and global challenges and opportunities present in today's new and ever-changing globalized Arctic," Sfraga said.
Sfraga is not a career diplomat but a scholar and geographer with decades of Arctic research experience. He currently serves as interim chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
On August 8, Trump announced that he expected to meet with the Russian president in Alaska on August 15. Later, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov confirmed the plan, saying the leaders would focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
