Algeria grateful for Russia’s non-interference in domestic affairs

Protests have been going on in Algeria since February 22

ALGIERS, April 12. /TASS/. Algeria highly appreciates Russia’s policy based on the principle of non-interference in the country’s domestic affairs, Algerian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abdelaziz Benali Cherif told TASS on Friday.

"It is perfectly clear from Russia’s official statements that it has not interfered in Algeria’s domestic affairs and won’t do it in the future. Moscow respects the Algerian people’s decision and we have every reason to believe that it will continue this way. We appreciate it," he said.

"As for the current situation, I would like to point out that the Algerian people have the right to have their own views and opinions," the diplomat went to say. "But frankly speaking, our people have always opposed intervention and occupation and will never accept foreign interference," he added.

"This is what our history has taught us," Abdelaziz Benali Cherif noted. "We always seek to boost friendly relations with other countries but we will never accept any interference even if it comes from our friends and brothers," he said.

"Today, you will have a chance to see that Algerians are very much interested in politics, they care about their home country but they are not going to use violence, they are willing to resolve all issues peacefully, maintaining good relations with all partners, primarily with Russia," the Algerian Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized.

Situation in Algeria

Protests have been going on in Algeria since February 22. At first, protesters demanded the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who stepped down on April 2. However, now protesters demand that Abdelkader Bensalah, who has been appointed the country’s interim president, also step down.

Mass protests are expected to take place in the country’s capital on Friday.
