More than 1 million people sign petition to cancel Brexit

The Petitions Committee at the House of Commons reported that it hit the absolute record in the speed of signature collection

LONDON, March 21. /TASS/. The petition in support of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union by revoking Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty gathered more than 1 million signatures on Thursday. The Petitions Committee at the House of Commons reported that it hit the absolute record in the speed of signature collection.

The number of people wishing to support this petition was so high throughout the day that the web site failed to operate at times, whereas from 80,000 to 100,000 people simultaneously browsed the website. The petition to the MPs to cancel Brexit still has great support, attracting 2,000 signatures each minute.

"The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with and we have had to make some changes to ensure the site remains stable and open for signatures and new petitions," the Petitions Committee tweeted.

Thus, the petition already received the sufficient support of 100,000 signatures needed for it to be submitted with the House of Commons for study. "The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now," the petition says.

British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jeremy Hunt earlier said that the vote in the parliament on the Brexit abolishment will be possible if the agreement on the terms of cooperation with the European Union is not adopted by the House of Commons the next week, though he called this scenario hardly probable.

British Prime Minister Theresa May asked the EU to postpone the date of the country’s withdrawal from the EU until June 30 instead of planned March 29. However, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said in response that the withdrawal can be postponed for a short period if the UK parliament approves the deal on Brexit. The British lawmakers earlier denied the draft treaty twice, on January 15 and March 12. This week Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow warned that he will not allow the government to vote on the treaty for the third time if it is not considerably changed.
