Merkel says she discussed Nord Stream 2, Ukraine, Syria in phone call with Putin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she hopes to have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon

BERLIN, April 17. /TASS/. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she had a telephone conversation on Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project, as well as Ukraine and Syria.

"I had a telephone conversation with President Putin, we discussed the Nord Stream and Ukraine, gas transit as well as Syria," Merkel told reporters.

German Government Spokesperson Steffen Seibert said earlier that the chancellor and the president "concurred that all efforts at the present moment must be aimed towards the launch of a political process to settle the years-long bloody conflict". "Opportunities in that respect were discussed," Seibert said.

Merkel has said she hopes to have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the foreseeable future.

"I believe we will meet anytime soon, but there is no specific date yet," the chancellor told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday. "In my opinion, the number of issues ranging from Ukraine and gas to a broad issue like Syria requires direct exchange of views."

According to Merkel, it is necessary to keep the communication channels with Russia open. The Kremlin press service said that in the phone call with Merkel, Putin pointed out that the an act of aggression against Syria by a group of Western countries had flagrantly violated rules of international law.
