MOSCOW, July 1. /TASS/. The Ilyushin Il-76 plane that went missing in Russia’s Irkutsk region earlier on Friday was in good repair, a source in the aviation services told TASS.
"The plane was in good condition, it passed all the required pre-flight procedures and it was technically faultless," the source said. According to him, the plane’s next regular maintenance operations were due only in 267 hours.
According to latest Emergencies Ministry reports, the plane did not go on the air for a radio contact at 06:30 am, Moscow time on Friday. The plane was equipped with an airborne spray tank for fighting wildfires in the Bayandayevsky district of the Irkutsk region.
Only the crew comprising 10 people was on board.
The Il-76 plane of the Russian Emergencies Ministry is the world’s largest fire-fighting plane. Dubbed the water bomber, it can drop 42 tons of water at once on a hot spot.
