Court fines Google $50.8 mln for failure to remove special military operation fakes

According to the court’s files, preparation of a protocol against Google was prompted by a series of videos on the YouTube, containing in particular unreliable information about Russian arm losses during the special military operation, casualties among noncombatants and plans to use nuke weapons

MOSCOW, December 20. /TASS/. The Tagansky court of Moscow fined Google 4.6 bln rubles ($50.8 mln) for the systemic failing to remove false information about the special operation in Ukraine, as well as information prohibited in Russia, a TASS correspondent reported from the courtroom.

"To recognize Google company as liable for committing an administrative offense under Part 5 of Article 13.41 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation (repeated failure to remove information in case the obligation to remove such information is stipulated by Russian Federation laws) and impose punishment in the form of an administrative fine in the amount of 4,611 mln rubles," the judge announced.

According to the court’s files, preparation of a protocol against Google was prompted by a series of videos on the YouTube, containing in particular unreliable information about Russian arm losses during the special military operation, casualties among noncombatants and plans to use nuke weapons. The Russian media regulator sent a repeated notice to remove these videos to the company but this was not done.

This is the third turnover-based fine assessed on Google in Russia for failures to remove banned and untrustworthy content.
