Bolshoi pondering possibility of taking Nureyev ballet on tour

The coming performances of Nureyev at the Bolshoi have been scheduled for June 26, 27 and 28.

MOSCOW, May 3. /TASS/. The Bolshoi is pondering a possibility of taking the 'Nureyev' ballet on a tour, the theater’s Director-General, Vladimir Urin told reporters on Thursday.

"There are some proposals in this connection and we’re considering them now," he said when a reporter asked him if the theater had proposals to take the ballet on a tour.

In part, the Bolshoi ballet has received a request for the ballet from London where it goes on a tour in the summer. It will perform there at Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Urin indicated that the momentousness of the production makes performances of ‘Nureyev’ abroad a highly complicated business.

"If at present the number of people the Bolshoi takes on tours abroad reaches 240, we’ll have to add another 120 people to perform Nureyev," he said. "That’s a very serious economic and financial problem and as soon as we specify the parameters of the performance to promoters with account of six truckloads of theatrical scenery, the figures really give them a pause for thought."

Nureyev, a ballet produced by director Kirill Serebrennikov to the music by Ilya Demutsky and choreography by Yuri Posokhov, premiered at the Bolshoi on December 9-10, 2017.

The booking that began on November 18 produced real agitation that was amplified in many ways by the prosecution targeting director Kirill Serebrennikov, who had been placed under house arrest on charges of financial embezzlement.

The coming performances of Nureyev at the Bolshoi have been scheduled for June 26, 27 and 28.
