WASHINGTON, March 13. /TASS/. The heads of the Russian and US academies of sciences, Alexander Sergeyev and Marcia McNutt, announced on Tuesday they had signed a new agreement on cooperation in science, engineering and medicine.

"It is a very important day for collaboration between scientists of the United States and the Russian Federation. We renewed our agreement and we specified some areas of our collaboration, which are problems of space research, climate research, medicine, neuroscience research, social science researches and so on," Sergeyev told reporters in Washington, adding that the agreement was signed in the year marking the 60th anniversary of the first agreement between the academies of sciences of the two states.

"I think that it is especially important to sign this agreement during this time of difficult geopolitical relations, because even in the case some bridges between the countries are destroyed, bridges in science should be built, and they are a real bridge to support this communication between countries," he went on.

The Russian scientist said that although the agreement outlines various areas for cooperation, but in general it is a framework deal.

"I hope that having signed this framework agreement today we will fill this agreement as soon as possible with real projects," he added.

According to Sergeyev, the Russian and US delegations have already discussed issues of cooperating in space research, including lunar programs, a Venus research project and experiments on board the International Space Station (ISS).

In a phone interview to TASS, Sergeyev said that issues of climate and ecology, as well as nuclear and biological security, were also named among potential areas of cooperation.

"Today, we and our colleagues from the National Academy of Sciences discussed the projects that we expect would fill in the agreement on cooperation in science, engineering and medicine. We managed to jointly outline several important areas of cooperation, first of all in space studies, and also in studies of how the Earth’s climate influences economic and social matters," he said.

The Russian scientist said that concepts of Russian and US social development will also be studied.

"Our countries are multi-confessional and multinational, that’s why issues of sustainable development, in particular the issue of migration, could not be left aside. Eventually, we decided that several joint projects should be devoted to those topics," he said.
