Paris interested in projects afoot at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

Russian Higher Education Minister Mikhail Kotyukov recalled that Russian scientists were involved in some major projects in France

MOSCOW, January 15. /TASS/. Paris has shown interest in some projects launched by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and certain steps will be taken this year to make France the Institute’s associate member, Science and Higher Education Minister Mikhail Kotyukov told the Gaidar forum on Tuesday.

"We’ve taken note of our French counterparts’ interest in Dubna projects and we hope that this year we will make progress towards formalizing France’s associate membership of this international organization. We will not stop there, though. Under the national project called Science Russia is to implement a number of major ideas, such as creation of megascience units in nuclear physics and the development of the research fleet. I hope that we will be able to pool our efforts here," Kotyukov said during the expert discussion Trianon Dialogue.

He recalled that Russian scientists were involved in some major projects in France, for instance, those at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the international experimental thermonuclear reactor ITER.

France’s Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovations, Frederique Vidal, sees another major cooperation project in creating infrastructure for Big Data, crucial to the development of artificial intelligence-based technologies.

"On the whole our cooperation has been developing in different fields, including mathematics, nuclear and theoretical physics and also in the economy, management and political sciences. France and Russia already cooperate actively in these fields," Vidal added.

The Trianon Dialogue was launched in December 2017 for enhancing ties between Russian and French civil societies and the promotion of new opportunities for wider contacts. Active participation of individuals, non-governmental organizations and businesses is envisaged.

The Gaidar Forum is an annual international economic conference held since 2010. Its organizers are the presidential Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy and the Association of Innovative Regions of Russia. TASS is the forum’s general information partner.
