Russians celebrate New Year holidays on grand scale

The December growth proved to be stronger than in the preceding months

MOSCOW, January 11 (Itar-Tass) — Russians decided not to save on the New Year holidays: retail networks registered a surge in sales. The spending of Russian citizens in the pre-New Year week – in the period from December 26, 2011 to January 1, 2012 grew by 16.1 percent, compared to the same period of 2010 and by 14.6 percent, compared to the preceding week, according to data obtained by the Romir public opinion research centre, Vedomosti writes. It calculates on a weekly basis the customer spending index based on a scan panel of buying of more than 1,000 households in cities with populations exceeding 100,000. The December growth proved to be stronger than in the preceding months: in November 2011 the index increased by 13 percent against November 2010 and by 1.8 percent against October 2011.
