MOSCOW, November 12. /TASS/. Russia and China intend to maintain active cooperation on Middle East problems both within the bilateral and international formats, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry commented on a meeting between Russian presidential envoy for the Middle East and North Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Chinese special envoy for the Middle East Gong Xiaosheng.

“While discussing the situation in the Middle East and North Africa special attention was paid to the development of events in Syria and Iraq, including within the context of the threat posed by the Islamic State terrorist group, and prospects for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement due to the escalation of tension in East Jerusalem,” the ministry said.

“The parties stressed the importance of cooperation on Middle East problems within the bilateral format and on different international and regional platforms, including the UN Security Council and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa),” the ministry said.

The Chinese envoy also held consultations with director of the Foreign Ministry Middle East and North Africa Department Sergei Vershinin.
