Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has forwarded to the Interior Ministry materials on financing of the election campaign of Moscow’s mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny by a foreign individual or company, the authority’s press service said on Monday.

“The Prosecutor General’s Office checks into an application from leader of the LDPR faction at the State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky about violations of the current legislation during the election campaign of a Moscow mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny,” the press service said. “At the current stage of the inspection, some of reasons Zhirinovsky has quoted have proved to be true.”

Headquarters of Moscow’s mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny deny receipt of foreign financial support for the election campaign.

“Before commenting on the statement Prosecutor General’s Office has made, we should see the materials they have,” the headquarters’ leader Leonid Volkov said on Monday. “Anyway, I can stress there is no financing of Alexei Navalny’s campaign by foreigners.”
