West's sanctions a 'big mistake,' underestimated Russia's resilience — Russian senator

According to Valentina Matviyenko, the West achieved nothing but the Nord Stream sabotage, which is an act of state terrorism which served to weaken Europe

MOSCOW, December 21. /TASS/. The collective West made a big mistake by imposing sanctions against Russia, grossly underestimating the country’s resilience, Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said.

"They (Western countries - TASS) made a big mistake by underestimating the resilience of our country. They expected a blitzkrieg, and now there are already 18,000 sanctions, nobody is counting anymore. The sanctions, the Russophobic hysteria they have launched in the world, using Ukraine to counter Russia," the top Russian senator said at a press conference on the results of the fall session.

"[They thought that] now the economy will quickly collapse, and Russia will implode from within. And they will win. Their much talked about counteroffensive - it failed. Besides, the goals they set, they did not achieve them," she added.

Matviyenko pointed out that the West's goals are clear. "[They believe] that this is their best investment, when they can only with money, and with small sums in fact, force Russia to submit to the hands of Ukrainians," she said.

According to the senator, the calculation was, among other things, that the West’s military-industrial complex would be a force to be reckoned with, there would be jobs and profits. "In the end, they achieved nothing but the Nord Stream sabotage, which is an act of state terrorism which served to weaken Europe. Russia showed good economic results, stability and, of course, the Russian armed forces did not allow any counterattack, no one to win on the battlefield," the speaker pointed out.
