MOSCOW, December 26 (Itar-Tass) — U.N./LAS Special Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will visit Moscow on December 29, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on December 21 that Minister Sergei Lavrov and Brahimi had discussed by phone how to reach a political and diplomatic settlement of Syria’s crisis.
“Working with the Syrian sides it is necessary to focus on the fact that there is no alternative to the fulfilment of the provisions of the final communique of the Geneva ministerial meeting on June 30,” Lavrov said.
“This will help to find the way out of the blind alley, stop bloodshed and the use of force and also to start substantive dialogue on the parameters of fundamental reforms in Syria in the interests of its citizens,” he said.
At the same time, the Russian diplomat noted that “not only the Syrian sides, but also key external players should strictly comply with the agreements reached at the above-mentioned meeting.”
Brahimi, in turn, confirmed his readiness to continue contacts with Russia on Syria.
On Monday, December 24, Brahimi had talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. According to Brahimi, the talks focused “on further steps, which should be taken to cease the conflict”.
Certain reports say Brahimi works on a “roadmap” to overcome the Syrian crisis. Earlier, the agreements were reached in Geneva by the Action Group. At present, Brahimi discusses the details of the agreements with the parties involved in the conflict.
