Mazda to recall over 12,000 cars in Russia — regulator

Russian dealer of Mazda automobiles will recall 12,301 Mazda 6 cars due to possible wrong activation of safety airbags

MOSCOW, March 2. /TASS/. OOO Mazda Motor Rus (Russian dealer of Mazda automobiles) will recall 12,301 Mazda 6 GG/GY cars sold from March 14, 2005 to May 19, 2008 due to possible wrong activation of safety airbags, Russia’s Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) said on Thursday.

"High absolute humidity in Mazda 6 (GG/GY) vehicles may lead to integrity impairment/cracking of the gas generator case of the driver’s front airbag and improper activation of the said airbag in case of a collision corresponding to airbag actuation criteria, the regulator reports.

Integrity impairment/cracking of the gas generator case may lead to driver or passengers being hit by steel fragments and to their severe injuries or death as a consequence.

Gas generators of driver’s front airbags will be replaced in automobiles subjected to recalling.

All the repair work will be free of charge for owners.
