36 nations set up Global Geothermal Alliance

PARIS, December 7. /TASS/. 36 nations announced the launch of the Global Geothermal Alliance was announced on Monday at the UN Climate Summit held in France. The alliance is called to promote cooperation between countries in the sphere of research and use of geothermal energy.

According to the Alliance, 90 nations have geothermal resources but just 24 states are using them. The Alliance members intend to increase the global geothermal electricity output fivefold and heat generation by geothermal sources twofold by 2030.

Four European countries joined the Alliance - France, Iceland, Poland and Switzerland.

Russia is operating geothermal power plants in Kamchatka and on the Kuril Islands.
