Russia creates full coverage missile attack warning system

The system identifies and warns of missile launches and provides missiles’ flight path data for government and military control centers

MOSCOW, November 30. /TASS/. Russia has created a full coverage radar system of warning of a missile attack, the chairman of the board of directors and general designer of the RTI concern, chief designer of the missile attack warning system Sergey Boyev said on Thursday.

"Last year we commissioned three long-range radars. In accordance with the president’s instructions we created the full coverage peripheral radar system unparalleled in the past," he said.

The system of warning of a missile attack identifies and warns of missile launches and provides missiles’ flight path data for government and military control centers. Also, it provides data concerning space objects for monitoring outer space.

New generation radars of the Voronezh type constitute the backbone of the warning system’s ground infrastructures.

Currently four Voronezh radars are on duty in the Leningrad, Kaliningrad, Irkutsk and Krasnodar regions. Three radars entered experimental duty in the Krasnoyarsk, Altai and Orenburg regions. Their testing is to be completed by the end of the year. That done they will go fully operational. A Voronezh-SM radar is to be deployed in Crimea in several years to come.
