Putin claims his statements on defense meant to appease Russian citizens

According to the president, the decrease in defense spending has caused a concern among the Russian population, "whether it will lead to a decrease in defense capability"

MOSCOW, February 20. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has explained his statements on Russia’s latest developments in the sphere of defense made during his Wednesday's address to the Russian parliament by a need to appease Russian citizens.

"I don’t think that the latest address was held "amidst the sounds of cannon fire", as you have put it. I had to explain to the country what we are spending considerable resources on, there was a need to appease the people, because we declared that we are decreasing our defense spending," Putin said during the meeting with Russian media representatives.

According to him, the decrease in defense spending has caused a concern among the Russian population, "whether it will lead to a decrease in defense capability". The Russian leader added that Russia had completed various projects. "It was only natural to talk about what we have achieved," Putin explained.

"And, of course, the most important thing is that everything we do and have done is, to some extent, a response to the exit of our US partners from the INF treaty, as I’ve already mentioned. And we had to tell the country that they can live their lives and feel safe, that we react, and we react in the way it was mentioned," the Russian leader added.
