Russia, Myanmar strengthening military ties — Defense Ministry

Russia's and Myanmar's defense officials have discussed the development of military cooperation at a meeting in Moscow

MOSCOW, August 17. /TASS/. Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel-General Alexander Fomin and Myanmar Air Force Commander Gen. Maung Maung Kyaw have discussed the development of military cooperation at a meeting in Moscow, the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters on Friday.

"The parties have discussed topical issues of bilateral military and military-technical cooperation and expressed interest in strengthening ties between the two countries’ armed forces in the future," the press service said.

In January, Fomin said that during Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s visit to Myanmar on January 20-21, an agreement was reached on supplying six Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 fighters to that country. He expressed the view that this aircraft would become the main combat fighter of the Myanmar Air Force to protect its territorial integrity and thwart terror attacks. According to Fomin, Russian-manufactured weapons have shown themselves to good advantage when used by Myanmar’s armed forces.
